MH17 Monument
This monument commemorates the 15 Hilversum citizens who died in the MH17 plane crash on 17 July 2014. The Malaysia Airlines plane crashed that day in a field full of sunflowers in Ukraine. The 15 bronze sunflowers, a sunflower for each victim, are connected by leaves. The largest flowers symbolize the adult who died in the crash. The smaller flowers symbolize the children who lost their lives. In the park bench next to sunflowers, the names of the victims are engraved forever. Hilversum is after Amsterdam the place with the most victims of the MH17 crash. Ornamental blacksmith Rein Tupker from Soest created the design of Sven Lamme. The statue was unveiled by Mayor Broertjes on July 17, 2016, exactly two years after the disaster.  This artwork with Sunflowers is for Hilversum the place of the commemorations of the victims. Every year, around 17 July, flower pots with sunflowers are placed in several places in the city.
